Achievement!

DATE: Tuesday 15th April 2008

Today I removed all weeds from the raised bed, it has given me a real sense of achievement. Even the other allotmenteers commented on how tidy is seems. I have some Organic compost to dig into the bed next, for the time being its covered with black weed suppressing fleece.

The weather has been the best so far this year today, and so allowed me to spend the whole day up on my plot. I burnt some large woody stems left over form the giant sunflowers, some old pieces of wood and again had and general tidy up.

I bought a tool store, for my garden tools from B&Q, however it started cracking as I assembled it, I am not impressed with it at all. However, its now not easy to take a part and take back, so I shall be sending photos and a letter of complaint!

While tidying up I found some Rhubarb and Raspberry canes, so this looks like I have a fruit bed too!

The work gets started!

DATE: Sunday 13th April 2008

Today I started to tidy up the allotment. With intermittent April showers and hail stones!, I've managed to make a start, gathering up all the plastic bags. I have never seen so many empty compost bags, bin liners and carrier bags, some have clearly been there for years! The wheelie bin now lives at home (again it was full of empty plastic bags!) and the rest of the rubbish, will need the use of my Dad's trailer to cart it all away.

I started on the compost heap, adding some new fresh stuff to it, including some of the compost from the plastic bags. This really needs to be turned and dug in, perhaps even an organic 'activator' might be need. The woody stuff needs chopping up into smaller pieces, otherwise I think it will be good compost. However, I can't decide whether its a good idea to use the compost bin, or the 'cage' that already exist so for the time being I'll use both!

Compost Heap Ready to Go!   Rubbish Ready to Go!   Looking better already!

Snow!

DATE: Sunday 6th April 2008

I was hoping to get started on the Allotment today and take some photos for the Blog, but we have had the heaviest snow fall of the year here and so frustratingly I can't do any work on the plot today. However, I am doing my research on line and finding some wonderful organic seed/plant nurseries and all the latest gadgets to help me with my new project!

I am a proud owner of an Allotment!

DATE: Saturday 5th April 2008

About a month or so ago I decided that I would like an Allotment! I wanted to start to grow my own herbs, plants, flowers etc. that I use in my incense, smudge mixes and other herbal products. I also need a new project to focus on. I contacted the local council about a plot and to my surprise this April several became available at my local allotment site.

Today at 1pm I meet the lettings committee member who showed me about four different plots to choose from. After walking around different plots I had chosen 3B; a plot that was previously own by an elderly gentlemen, who had left it in an untidy state. However I was told that he said I could keep everything on the plot. And so I have inherited a wheelbarrow, garden fork, compost bin, tarpaulin, several plastic buckets, some onions and asparagus.

The first stage will be to tidy up the plot, and clear all the weeds, start digging and plan how I will plant it up.

This is what I have inherited

I hope to grow medicine herbs and plants as well as wild flowers and other ingredients I use in my herbal products. I will try grow my own vegetables and some fruit, and it will all be organic too.

And with this blog I hope to share with you my journey with this little plot as I attempt to 'Grow my own......'

The old guy seemed to love plastic!   Weeds, weeds and more weeds!   A very sad rasied bed!
